In the UK, dyslexia is recognised as a specific learning difficulty (SpLD) that primarily affects skills involved in reading, writing, and spelling.
It is not linked to intelligence but relates to how individuals process information, often struggling with phonological awareness, verbal memory, and rapid processing skills.
Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that can vary in severity, and people with dyslexia may also have strengths in areas like creativity and problem-solving.
The British Dyslexia Association highlights that early identification and support can help manage its effects, with tailored teaching approaches and accommodations often proving beneficial.
A Specialist Assessor for Dyslexia is a qualified professional trained to carry out detailed diagnostic assessments to identify whether a child has dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties (SpLD).
In the UK, specialist assessors typically hold postgraduate qualifications (Level 5 or Level 7) in assessing and teaching learners with SpLD and are often members of professional bodies such as PATOSS (Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties).
They are trained to:
For children aged 8–16, this type of assessment can provide clarity at a crucial stage in their education.
What Happens in a Dyslexia Assessment?
A full diagnostic assessment is not just a reading or spelling test. It looks at a wide range of skills, including:
The assessment usually takes around 3 hours and is carried out in a calm, supportive environment. Children are not expected to “revise” or prepare — it is about understanding how they learn, not testing what they know. Parents and schools complete background questionnaires, and previous school information may be reviewed to build a complete picture.
Why Is It Helpful for Children Aged 8–16?
1️⃣ It Provides Clarity
Many parents notice their child is bright but struggling with reading, spelling, or written work. A diagnostic assessment explains why. This often reduces frustration for both the child and family.
2️⃣ It Can Unlock School Support
A specialist report can help schools:
Put targeted support in place
Apply for access arrangements (such as extra time in exams)
Make reasonable adjustments in class
For older children (especially in Years 9–11), this can be particularly important for GCSE preparation.
3️⃣ It Identifies Strengths as Well as Difficulties
Dyslexia assessments highlight strengths in reasoning, creativity, or problem-solving — not just areas of challenge. This balanced profile can boost a child’s confidence and self-understanding.
4️⃣ It Guides Next Steps
The report includes tailored recommendations for home and school, so families know exactly what to do next — whether that’s classroom strategies, exam arrangements, or further investigation if needed.
When Might an Assessment Be Appropriate?
Assessment is generally most reliable from age 8 onwards, when literacy skills have had time to develop.

Specialist Assessments can lead to a formal Dyslexia diagnosis (where appropriate). This process involves some initial planning prior to the assessment itself - a detailed questionnaire for both parents and the school, as well as ensuring that your child has current hearing and eyesight tests (within the last 2 years). A visual screener is carried out as part of the preparation process.
Assessments last about three hours.
